Urban CNC is a designer and manufacturer of CNC machines and accessories.
The focus of these designs is to bring professional quality and features to hobby priced machines. This is done by strategically selecting components which will achieve the desired accuracy and functionality without adding unnecessary costs.
How are costs reduced?
Costs can be reduced by either sacrificing performance or reliability. Professional machines are expensive because they attempt to achieve both high performance and very high reliability. Hobby machines do not need the same level of reliability as a professional shop because the duty cycle is lower.
Duty cycle is the percentage of time that a machine is operating. A hobby machine likely averages a couple hours running time per day versus 8 to 12 hours for a full time shop.
Urban CNC Design Capabilities
Urban CNC has expertise in mechanical and electrical design.
Mechanical Design
Urban CNC machines are engineered to handle specific loading conditions. This includes mechanical design and analysis of the frame, bearings and drive components.
We can calculate how cutting force from the router loads the frame and bearings to estimate deflection and required motor torque.
Electrical Design
Urban CNC calculates electrical requirements and custom selects suitable motors, motor drivers, controllers, power supplies and relays. Wire harnesses are designed and made inhouse.
Urban CNC has Linuxcnc programming capabilities. This allows custom features to be added to tailor the machine for specific needs. Examples include custom axis sizing, dual axis drive motors, custom homing sequence, vfd speed control, custom tool change sequences, automatic tool length measurements and custom relays.
